The survey was a great idea with such an uncomfortable subject. Privacy can be empowering for students making them feel comfortable sharing with you. It seems like it was a good anticipatory exercise as well, you peeked their interest and they should be prepared once you get into more of the content.
Fiona ~ It was great to hear that your Head Teacher on board with this project – especially since it’s about a touchy subject – sex ed. The vignette of your students taking the SurveyMonkey survey was priceless. Isn’t it amazing how much information can be gleaned from them? The added benefit to your project was the interest one of your fellow teachers showed in your project - way to go! Pretty soon the whole school will be on board.
Fiona- What a great way to ease the students into the topic of sexual reproduction! An anonymous survey about their knowledge and comfort levels would be a great jumping off point. It sounds like you have a great group of kids to work with, like when they were willing to help each other out with the language barriers the ESL students were facing. That sort of help ties in with our collaborative learning focus! Great job, Fiona :). -Katy
